welcome to the journal

Hey there, it is Becky with Finch & Mae Studio out of Rio. So glad you are here. I specialize in maternity, newborn, baby and cake smash portraits. My sweet little studio is about 30 minutes from Madison, Sun Prairie, Portage and more.

A common question that I get asked is: “How should I dress for my newborn session?”. I will say that I do send out a prep guide prior to your newborn session that is packed with information including how to dress.

So a few things before we dive in.

-It gets warm in the studio. Being postpartum, hormones can sometimes be whacky and cause our body temps to be a smidge wild. If you have had a baby, you know exactly what I am talking about.

-I recommend dressing cooly even if it winter out, the studio stays warm, sometimes at a good 80 degrees. It helps your precious babe stay warm and comfy while they are having their portraits done.

-Flowy tops. Flowy tops are honestly fantastic for those postpartum bodies.

-Jeans? Sure. Maternity clothes? Absolutely. To be honest, majority of your portraits with your baby are from the waist up. I have had mamas come in sweatpants and you would absolutely never know.

-Clothes that don’t wrinkle the better.

So here we go.

I always encourage parents to wear clothes that fit you well and are comfortable. For example, nothing is worse than needing to keep adjusting your blouse to cover straps or to rebutton buttons. For Dads, I always recommend making sure that your shirt can be tucked in or looks neat if untucked. Many Dads also wear long sleeves and then get pretty warm during the session so they naturally want to roll up their sleeves. I don’t encourage this. A better option could be a plain colored t shirt, a polo or even a button up.

Shoes. No worries here. Actually, feel free to kick off your shoes in the studio especially in the shooting area. If you do wish to wear shoes, that is okay but they won’t be in the images so no need to coordinate that into your outfit.

Solid colors are perfect. I recommend avoiding anything with writing or logos. Avoid bright colors, reds, bright pinks and oranges. So you are probably wondering what colors to wear. Neutrals, pastels, whites, earth tones, blacks and grays are all fantastic options. If you want to wear prints, I recommend choosing small and non-distracting prints.

For siblings, it is usually best to bring their outfit with and dress in the studio as kiddos can make a mess at any time. I also recommend any food or drinks that may stain their faces prior to the session. For example red colored juices, colored frosting on cookies or cupcakes.

Still stuck on what to wear? The studio offers a client wardrobe for mamas and kiddos up to age 2/3 with a few larger sizes for boys and girls. A lot of families send me their wardrobe choices to see if there is anything that they should change and I am always more than happy to help.

welcome to the journal

Hey there, welcome to Finch & Mae Studio’s blog. Finch & Mae specializes in maternity and newborn photography. We chat about everything here at the blog from maternity and newborn sessions to when you should book which sessions. How do you dress? We cover that too.

Alyssa had reached out have her maternity and newborn portraits done. We clicked right away and we discussed everything that her and her husband Rusty were wanting out of the session. We chatted over the pregnancy, their adorable little pup and really got to know each other.

Once Alyssa booked, we went over wardrobe and location choices. You guys, they drove over an hour to see me for both of their sessions, talk about a compliment.

Their maternity session took place in DeForest, WI at the beautiful golden hour that we are so blessed to have. The session flew by and was filled with so much laughter, outfit changes and chatting over their babe that was soon going to be entering the world and their hopes for having their dog in some of the family portraits.

The newborn session arrived and their sweet babe was completely fine with anything that he had done fo table and prop poses. Alyssa and Rusty enjoyed some quality time together as I went through the typical process that I have in the studio.

I had a certain idea of what I had wanted to do for their newborn son and their dog for the best portrait possible. I envisioned it as a massive print hanging on their wall for years to come. When I tell you that it turned out better than I could have imagined- I am not kidding. It is by far one of my most favorite portraits.

To be honest, nothing is more exciting for me than to see families during their pregnancy and again when their sweet baby has entered this world. It is just an incredible thing to see families grow, become parents and share their stories of the first few days, how labor went. When families come into the studio, I love getting to hear about labor and deliver, we chat about how baby is fed, how are they sleeping, who has met the baby? Getting to know families on such a personal and intimate level is one of my top goals. It helps form such a great bond with families that I tend to see a lot over the next few years.

I am so excited for you, your family is growing and that is wonderful. Being pregnant is such an experience and to be honest, it should be celebrated. Maternity Photography is such a passion of mine with sessions ranging from outdoors to inside my Rio Studio.

I absolutely love getting to meet expecting mamas and making them feel like they are incredibly stunning- because they are!

Maternity Photography is truly beautiful. Many mamas choose to be in beautiful gowns while others choose to truly embrace their body for all that it is. The studio offers a wide variety of gowns and other pieces to give you a choice in how you want to look.

Maternity sessions aren’t just for those that are having their first baby. Maternity Photography Sessions are for every mama out there. Mamas reach out for a variety of reasons from infertility, IVF, planned and unplanned pregnancies. At the end of the day, each pregnancy is incredibly special and should be cherished.

Glam Maternity Photography is an incredible way to document this time in your life.

How does a Glam Maternity Session work?

  1. You book your Glam Maternity Session. Once you are booked, we get a date and time set for you to come into the studio for your session. Maternity sessions take place between 28 and 32 weeks typically. You can book your Glam Maternity Session here: https://book.usesession.com/i/93fzGZ0Cr/session-type/146837
  2. I do recommend coming to your maternity session ready to go and in comfy clothes that don’t leave lines/indents on your skin. The studio does supply pasties and nude thongs if needed. You are of course welcome to bring your own.
  3. When you arrive, we go over the client wardrobe. We talk over your comfort levels of being completely clothed to complete nudity. To be honest, most mamas wind up being completely comfortable with little to no clothing. We pull the items that you are most interested in and begin.
  4. I help you pose in the most flattering ways, no double chins here.
  5. We take water breaks and sit when mama needs to.
  6. When the session is over, we discuss your social media preview, your proofing gallery and what comes after that.

Finch & Mae Photography Studio is located in Rio, WI. Rio is a little town about thirty minutes from Madison, Sun Prairie, Beaver Dam, Columbus, Poynette, Portage and beyond. Becky specializes in Bump to Baby photography.

welcome to the journal

Fall Micros this year were a bit of a wild ride. The session was originally scheduled for one day where families came out to my property and had their photos taken. Well, it did not go that easy.

The week of the family sessions, I was in Bayfield, WI photographing an elopement with Lace & Brass. The Friday that I was coming home, I was continuously checking the weather and sure enough, it was still high chances of rain so I sent out emails. All of the families were agreeing that the weather was just not going to be favorable to photograph in so we started rescheduling.

For some families, the new session date that we had picked worked out perfectly and had wonderful glowing sunsets and others had snow flurries flying.

Despite the weather and some families having their session date rescheduled a total of three times, we made it work and it was absolutely incredible. A lot of these families that I worked with for the Fall Micros this year, I had spent photographed last year and I tell you, it is the biggest freaking honor.

Each family was amazing with kiddos that were so willing to give all the smiles and the best hugs.

The biggest questions that I had this year was “what do I wear?” and “what if my kids don’t cooperate?” My answer to this is that you should wear what you are comfortable in first off. As far as colors, I always recommend neutrals, earth tones, and jewel tones. Patterns and textures are also incredible to incorporate into your color scheme. My biggest tip? Pick mom’s outfit and build from there. As far as kiddos cooperating? It depends on the kid, the weather, did they nap? Are they hungry? I will be totally transparent, some kiddos show up and are complete rockstars. Other kiddos need a nudge. I don’t force kiddos to do anything, we instead play games, they tickle their parents, we run, we look at leaves, look for birds and so on. By giving them things to do, they don’t realize just how much fun they are having and the most genuine smiles and laughs come out.

Next year’s Fall Micros Tinies have already been released and I am so excited to see what comes of this next year.

Do you want a session for next year? I have limited availability. Check it out.

Fall Miros and Fall Tinies are held in Rio, Wisconsin at Becky’s personal property. We explore the entire area together while capturing the most authentic moments.

Rio, Wisconsin is a short drive from Columbus, Sun Prairie, Madison and beyond. It is completely normal from families to drive from Sauk, Wisconsin Rapids, Sun Prairie, Cottage Grove, Beaver Dam, Marshall and more.
