Packing your hospital bag is exciting… and a little overwhelming. As a mom myself and a photographer who has met hundreds of new families, here’s the truth:
You don’t need everything Pinterest tells you.
Here’s a simple, mom-approved hospital bag checklist for Madison, Sun Prairie, Rio, and surrounding areas — the things you’ll actually use.
For You
- Comfortable robe or cardigan
- Nursing-friendly tank or gown
- Comfy socks or slippers
- Hair ties + lip balm
- Lightweight blanket from home
- Toiletries you love
- Portable fan (trust me!)
- Extra-long phone charger
- Snacks you actually enjoy
- A folder for paperwork
For Baby
- 1–2 simple zip-up sleepers
- A soft swaddle
- A hat or bow
- Going-home outfit (nothing complicated)
- Car seat checked for install
Optional (But Lovely)
- Your own pillow
- A cute blanket
- Sound machine
- A small tripod for hospital photos
What You Don’t Need
- Multiple newborn outfits
- Diapers (hospital provides them)
- Fancy postpartum supplies
- Lots of toys or accessories
- Big suitcases full of “just in case” items
