A Fresh 48 Newborn Session takes place in your hospital room prior to discharge.

Why is it called a Fresh 48? Well, Fresh 48 sessions are done in the hospital prior to discharge. Usually the morning after baby is born. This is typically at around 48 hours old.

These sessions are extremely emotional, candid, little posing (guidance given if needed). We capture all of those sweet and tender moments in the hospital. A lot of parents that have had children before have the newborn’s siblings come to the hospital during the session to meet their newest sibling.

Fresh 48 sessions are more of a documentary style than they are anything else. Sometimes nurses get in on the photographs, your one of many first outfit changes, feeding your baby, bonding as a family.

Fresh 48 sessions are simple.

From the very beginning, the session starts off simple. When I arrive to your hospital room, I wash my hands right away. I don’t bring artificial lighting (we will actually shut your room lights off) and I leave all of my props and wraps at the studio. Are you curious what you need to bring for your baby? For yourselves? I do recommend anything with large logos as they are distracting.

For baby:

-Neutral swaddles (nothing super bright that may color cast onto you or your baby).

-White onesie or something similar.

-Any bows or hats but the simpler the better.

-Name plates are always cute but not necessary.

For yourselves:

-Mama, dress comfortably. Don’t feel the need to wear makeup, do your hair and dress perfect. You just had a baby, give yourself some grace.

-Dad, dress casual. Neutral toned shirts with jeans is perfect.

-Older siblings, dress how you normally would. Again, avoid bright colored shirts as they color cast.

I bring my Sony A7III and my 35mm lens to your session and begin photographing your baby. I will give guided cues if needed but for the most part, I am just there to capture these fleeting moments. Baby is almost always held or in the hospital provided basinet though the session and that is perfectly okay.

All in all the sessions are about an hour or less in length.

How do we schedule the Fresh 48 is such a common question, let’s chat about it.

-Once you book your Fresh 48, your due date goes on my calendar. This essentially means that I am on call from 38-42 weeks. I always recommend that you keep me updated on your pregnancy from 38 weeks on. It gives me a better idea of when you may go into labor or if there is anything significant that I need to be aware of. Once you go into labor, send me a text so I know to be getting my gear prepared, find child care if needed and plan my upcoming days. Once baby arrives and you are settled, have your partner or even yourself send me a text. We will then make a plan for typically the following day around 10am. The reason I say 10 am, is this is when rounds are typically finished and you are able to sit back and soak in those fresh baby snuggles.
