There is something especially sweet about newborn studio photography sessions that are kept simple.
No elaborate themes. No overwhelming props. Just your baby, your family, soft textures, neutral tones, and photographs that still feel beautiful years from now.
For this newborn session, we created a mix of classic wrapped portraits, simple baby-led images, a few subtle fall-inspired details, and family photographs with mom, dad, and big sister. The result was a gallery that felt warm, relaxed, and focused completely on this little baby and the people who love them most.
Newborn Studio Portraits That Keep the Focus on Baby
One of my favorite parts of newborn photography is creating variety without making the session feel overly styled.
We started with soft cream wrapping and warm, earthy textures. The wooden basket, brown layers, and neutral wrap gave the images a cozy look while still keeping baby as the main focus.
I also love including a few completely simple setups. A white or cream background, a soft wrap, tiny hands and feet, and sometimes those wide-open newborn eyes are more than enough.
These are often the photographs parents end up loving the most because they show exactly how tiny their baby was.
A Little Seasonal Detail Without Turning It Into a Theme
Because this baby arrived during the fall season, we added one setup with a mustard wrap and a few small felt pumpkins.
Seasonal details can be really beautiful when they are kept subtle. Instead of building an elaborate fall set, the colors and tiny pumpkins simply give a little nod to the season baby was born in.
That way, the image still feels like a newborn portrait first.
Simple, Natural Newborn Posing
Not every photograph needs a basket, bucket, or prop.
Some of the sweetest images are simply baby resting on a soft neutral surface. I especially love capturing newborn expressions, little stretches, curled-up legs, tiny fingers, and all of the movements babies naturally make during a session.
And yes—sometimes they decide to open their eyes and see exactly what we’re doing.
Those little personality-filled images are always worth keeping.
Mom Deserves to Be in the Photos Too
One thing I encourage every new mom to do is step into the photographs.
You may feel tired. You may not feel completely like yourself yet. You may be tempted to say, “Just photograph the baby.”
But these images aren’t only for you right now.
Someday, your baby is going to want photographs showing exactly what it looked like when you held them close, kissed their forehead, and stared at that tiny face.
The black-and-white images from this session are some of my favorites because they feel quiet, emotional, and timeless.
Your Newborn Session Is Also a Family Session
Newborn portraits are about the baby, but they’re also about the beginning of a new chapter for the entire family.
Parent photographs don’t need to feel stiff or overly posed. Some of the best images happen while parents are simply looking at each other, holding their baby, laughing, or taking in the fact that this tiny person is finally here.
And when there is an older sibling, I always want to document this version of the family too.
Your children are never going to be exactly these ages together again.
What Should You Wear for Newborn Photos?
You do not need to perfectly match.
I generally recommend choosing soft, muted colors and keeping patterns minimal so your clothing doesn’t compete with your baby.
Cream, tan, oatmeal, muted green, soft brown, dusty blue, and other neutral or earthy colors photograph beautifully in the studio.
Most importantly, the finished gallery should still look like your family.
If you are unsure of what to wear for your newborn studio photography session, I am more than happy to help. Many clients choose to utilize the studio wardrobe for their maternity and newborn sessions.
When Should You Book a Newborn Session?
It is best to reserve your newborn session while you are still pregnant so I can save space around your due date. I do recommend to clients to book their newborn session at the end of their second trimester or the beginning of their third trimester.
Once baby arrives, we choose the actual session date.
My studio newborn sessions take place in Rio, Wisconsin, and I photograph families from the Madison area and surrounding communities.
If you are expecting, you do not need to wait until baby is here to reach out.
